Today 30th April,
10th day of the lunar month is a holy and an auspicious day and as today is
observed as the Parinirvana anniversary of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel all over Bhutan. The whole country
commemorates this day by paying homage to Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Several
religious rituals are performed in the temples in his honor. This day is spent
by offering special prayers and lighting butter lamps by enthusiasts. Devotees
also visit sacred sites on this day. Funerary services are also held in many
places for this commemoration. Since this day is a national holiday in Bhutan,
school, business and working people get a day off on this day.
The following

today.
Teaching about historical figures, such as Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, in a classroom can be an engaging and educational experience. By using these images, we can educate students on the significance of Zhabdrung Kuchoe, as well as impart knowledge about Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel - a highly intellectual leader. Typically, these subject matters can be incorporated into multiple fields of study, including but not limited to English (with its focus on short stories), Social Studies, Dzongkha, and even History at an advanced academic level.
The following are the examples of how we can use these pictures in teaching students.
- In English and Dzongkha Subject: We have the ability to recount the tale of the identity of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel and elucidate his exceptional leadership qualities in Bhutan.
- In History Subject: We may also delve into the history of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel and explore the reasons why he holds significant relevance in Bhutanese culture. We can also discuss his accomplishments, such as unifying Bhutan, establishing the dual system of governance, and his impact on Bhutanese Buddhism.
- In Social studies Subject: By incorporating social studies into the curriculum, we can effectively educate individuals on the significance of Zhabdrung Kuchoe. In addition, we can provide instruction on the proper way to observe and commemorate Zhabdrung Kuchoe.
- Creative Activities: Depending on the grade level and subject, we can incorporate creative activities such as drawing, writing, conducting research or role-playing exercises to allow students to engage more deeply with the subject matter. For example, students can create their own artwork inspired by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel or write a short story imagining a conversation with him.
To sum up, on the occasion of Zhabdrung Kuchoe celebrated by the Bhutanese on 30th April, it is crucial to honor Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal by making offerings, seeking his blessings, expressing gratitude for his kindness, being inspired by his achievements, and above all, remembering the valuable ideals, virtues, principles, and traditions that he embodied. As an educator, we can use a picture of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel to supplement with historical context, additional resources, and engaging activities to provide a comprehensive learning experience for students.
